With hobbies like painting, makeup artistry, and playing World of Warcraft, it’s a wonder that Megan Massacre is still able to fit “full time tattoo artist” into her schedule. This 22-year-old resident of Reading, Pa. has been tattooing for four years and recently took positions at both Reading’s Lasting Image Tattoo and Philadelphia’s Deep Six Laboratory. Luckily for us, Megan has also taken up modeling as a hobby and somehow amongst all this, found time to answer a few questions, too.

When did you decide that you wanted to be a tattoo artist?

It pretty much just fell into my lap. I was working at a department store selling furniture when I started my apprenticeship. A girl that I worked with asked if I would give her a ride to a local tattoo shop after work. She wanted to try to get a job as a piercer. While she was talking to the tattoo shop owner, she mentioned to him that I could draw really well. It was all I did when I was sitting at work all day. So he asked if I would draw him a few quick sketches. After he looked them over he simply asked, “Want to do a tattoo?” Despite the fact that I was scared to death, I said yes. He set me up and I did a name on the leg of one of the guys who worked there. When I was done with the name, he then asked me to freehand a small picture of my choice on his leg. When I was finished they asked if I would like an apprenticeship, and voila! Here I am.

So what attracted you to tattoos and when did you get your first tattoo?

I honestly had no tattoos until a few months after I started my tattoo apprenticeship. I was 18 at the time. The idea of being able to carry artwork on your body with you all the time seemed so cool to me.

Have you worked in a tattoo studio in Philadelphia before? What is that experience like?

I have only been at Deep Six for a short time, but it has been an awesome experience. Not only is this the first shop I’ve worked at in Philly, but it’s also the first shop I’ve ever worked at that was filled with so much talent. It’s definitely a breeding ground for creativity. Everyone there feeds off of each other. Also, the people there are pretty close. It’s more like a family, and the environment is really laid back. It’s definitely a one of a kind shop, and I’m really happy to have become a part of it.

How do you manage working in two shops that are over 60 miles away from each other?

It’s really not that bad. I recently parted with a shop in Reading where I was working full time, so I like still being able to work in Reading on the weekends because I can still accommodate my clients from the area. I really enjoy working in Philadelphia. It’s where I’ve always wanted to be, so it’s nice to be able to do both. I’m not gonna lie, the drive does suck, especially with gas prices. But it’s more than worth it.

I’m sure you always work with guys. Being a petite female, do you think you your experiences as a tattoo artist differ from the norm?

Yes, I think my experiences are definitely different then a male in my position. Being a girl surrounded by all men for so many years, especially in tattoo shops, has changed me as a person. I think I’ve almost adopted a male personality. Many guys I’ve worked with have told people that I’m really a guy in a girl’s body. As for being in the shop environment, it can make things both easier and harder for me. Guys in shops usually feel the need to look out and take care of me, so I never usually have to worry about people bothering me, but it can also make it difficult to talk to other guys. It can start drama for me because guys I have worked with in the past would develop crushes on me, and that can end up in a messy situation within the work place. Also I usually have trouble with the wives/girlfriends of some of the guys I’ve worked with, because of jealousy and silly things like that. What they don’t realize is, I get to see how their men really are, and I don’t really want any part of that. For the most part I have had awesome friendships with many of the guys I’ve worked with, and they have become more like my brothers. I love them.

A lot of people know you as a model and a lot of people know you as a tattoo artist. Which do you prefer and why?

Tattoo artist, first and foremost. Since I’ve begun tattooing, it’s become my passion and it’s what I care about most in life. I’ll be a tattoo artist until I can’t physically hold a machine anymore. Modeling started off for me by taking a few pictures for a tattoo project a photographer was doing. Ever since, it has become a hobby. It’s just fun for me, and it’s not something that will probably last past 30.

How much time do you dedicate to World of Warcraft and do you have a WoW tattoo?

I don’t have a WoW tattoo…yet. I plan on getting one, hopefully someday soon. I was an avid player for a while, dedicating almost four hours a day at least five days a week. I honestly haven’t played at all in the past two weeks. Because of recent job and life changes I haven’t been able to find the time. Once I get settled I will pick it up again, but probably a few less hours a week. Anyone interested in playing, my main is named Traverse and it’s on the Earthern Ring server…how dorky am I?
